Here is an idea for one of the projects we can get going....establishment of a community apiary. The apiary would be open for all that wish to keep the bees, but lack the space to do so. It would be run by MAA, and there would be a per-hive membership (let's say $5 - $10/ hive, that would cover the apiary maintenance, equipment use, and maybe the Fall varroa treatment. The limit might be 3 - 5 hives/person, depending on the site capacity and interest. Of course, the active MAA members would have a preferential status in obtaining colonies (from our stock), discounted membership, and so on. We may get some space from McGill, somewhere around the Arboretum. I believe that would be a quite unique establishment, that would, hopefully, get people to become more active in the field of beekeeping. It would encourage experimentation (regarding the beekeeping techniques, and so), and possible novel approaches to the beekeeping, while keeping it as organic as possible. The possibilities would be endless! So, if you think that the project is good, and realistic, or maybe the opposite, please leave your comment. Thanks!
